Visitor Spending Boosts Evansville’s Local Economy Amid Uncertain Times
Even during a time of economic uncertainty, the visitor economy in Evansville continues to show resilience—and local businesses are seeing the benefits. According to Zartico, visitor spending trends for spring 2025 remain strong, particularly from our key drive markets like Indianapolis and Louisville, reinforcing the critical role that tourism plays in supporting Evansville’s retail shops, attractions, restaurants, and experiences.
In fact, around 20% of Evansville’s core visitor markets now make up roughly 60% of total visitation. That means a small group of highly engaged travelers—mainly from nearby cities—are continuing to visit and spend in our community. Visitors are choosing local: they’re shopping at our stores, dining at our restaurants, and discovering the unique experiences that make Evansville special.
Visitor spending toward local businesses has also risen, increasing from 25% in March 2024 to 27% in March 2025. This 2% growth shows more visitor dollars are flowing into locally owned establishments rather than national chains, helping to further strengthen Evansville’s small business community. Retail spending is also trending upward, rising from 45% to 48% of total visitor spend. At the same time the average visitor spend on attractions grew from $37 to $57—a strong indicator that those who visit are investing more in the experiences that make Evansville unique.
The impact of the visitor economy reaches even further. Tourism supports more than 10,000 hospitality jobs in Vanderburgh County and helps reduce the tax burden for residents. In fact, visitor spending saves each Vanderburgh County household approximately $1,200 in taxes each year. When visitors choose Evansville, they’re not just creating memories—they’re helping sustain the businesses, jobs, and quality of life that make our community thrive.
Tourism remains one of Vanderburgh County’s most important and relevant industries, directly impacting local families, businesses, and neighborhoods. As we celebrate the strength of our visitor economy, it’s also a good reminder to continue supporting our local businesses whenever possible. Every meal, every purchase, and every visit helps keep Evansville vibrant, welcoming, and growing.
