Across all three students—Carla Tamás, Zsuzsanna (Zsuzsi) Bodoni, and Milan Asztalos—one theme came through clearly: the people.
Carla shared that the biggest surprise was how open and friendly everyday interactions felt. Simple moments—like someone apologizing after a small bump in a shop—stood out as unexpected and meaningful.

Expectations vs. Reality
Before arriving, each student had a different picture of what Evansville might be like—but all found it to be more dynamic than expected.
Carla explained that many in the group anticipated a small town, but instead found a city that felt larger, more lively, and more developed. Milan had a similar expectation, imagining a quiet place with limited activity, only to discover a destination with plenty to see and do.
Zsuzsi compared Evansville to her hometown, expecting a fast-paced environment. While she found similarities, what stood out most was the pace of life—more relaxed, with a strong emphasis on community and time spent together.
A Full Evansville Experience
While classroom time was central to the visit, the experience extended far beyond school walls.
Students toured the University of Southern Indiana, explored hands-on learning environments, and visited major employers like Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana—offering a real-world look at career pathways and innovation.
They participated in community events, shared meals with host families, attended sporting events, and experienced traditions like an American-style cookout. Even a day trip to Indianapolis was part of the broader itinerary, but it was the time spent in Evansville—living like locals—that left the strongest impression.
Favorite Places and Moments
For all three students, the most meaningful places weren’t just attractions—they were the spaces where connection happened.
Reitz Memorial High School quickly became a favorite for Carla and Zsuzsi. Beyond the classroom, it offered opportunities to try new sports, meet students, and build friendships. Zsuzsi highlighted the school’s athletic fields, where events like track meets and soccer games created lasting memories.
Milan pointed to a different favorite: Roppongi, where trying new cuisine became part of the experience. Zsuzsi also noted stops like Honey Moon Coffee Co. as must-visits, highlighting the role local businesses play in shaping a visit.
Some of the most memorable moments were simple ones. Carla described late-night drives through neighborhoods with her host family as a favorite experience—an authentic look at everyday life. Milan shared that time spent with his host family was the highlight of his trip, while Zsuzsi pointed to university visits and hands-on learning experiences as standout moments.
What They’d Recommend to Future Visitors
When asked what they would tell friends visiting Evansville, their advice reflected a mix of practical tips and meaningful experiences.
Carla suggested arriving prepared for American staples—like strong air conditioning and drinks filled with ice—but also leaving room to bring home new memories (and a few extra souvenirs).
Milan emphasized the importance of connecting with locals, recommending time with host families as a way to fully experience the culture.
Zsuzsi encouraged visitors to explore local coffee shops, attend sporting events like lacrosse matches, and take part in community-based activities—experiences that offer a deeper look into everyday life in Evansville.

A central part of the visit was time spent at Reitz Memorial High School, where students attended classes, shadowed peers, and experienced a different education system.
Carla noted the approachable relationships between students and teachers, making learning feel more engaging. Milan appreciated the welcoming environment and the opportunity to grow academically, while Zsuzsi found the hands-on classes and inclusive atmosphere to be especially impactful.
